A New Salvo in the Culture War
One of the things I’ve observed since McCain selected Sarah Palin for the VP slot on his ticket is the stark contrast between liberal America and basically Americans. The attacks from the left questioning the family values of someone they don’t even know and even making it up and putting it out there to muddy the waters of her morality.
In my opinion all this does is emphasize the polarity of the two parties, one side tsk, tsking the choice of a mother to bring a “special needs” child into the world knowing full well the options available to her.
Margaret Sanger is alive and well in America, and the attacks on Sarah Palin prove it. Liberals who believe that abortion should be available for every family who wants it are appalled that her daughter is not only pregnant but plans to keep the baby.
They’re appalled that she eats meat and fires guns, hates corruption in government and expresses her values freely and unapologetic.
Sarah Palin is a threat, a threat to a bohemian life style and narcissistic self centered individuals who only think about themselves above all others…..children and spouses included.
How far does this desire for control over every aspect of humanity go?
Alabama Plans to Tax Fat Employees to Recoup Insurance Costs
Alabama is rolling out a creative but controversial program that will subject its 37,527 state employees to possibly humiliating at-work weigh-ins and fat tests. If they tip the scales, they’ll be given a choice: slim down or pay up.
The state is trying to solve two of its biggest problems — health insurance costs and obesity — in one fell swoop.
Beginning in 2010, Alabama, which has the second highest obesity rate in the country, will start charging all of its employees an extra $25 per month for health insurance. (Currently, single workers pay nothing; family plans cost $180 a month.)
But there’s a way to avoid the fee: Get a check-up at an in-office “wellness center,” where nurses will check for diabetes and hypertension and measure blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels and Body Mass Index (BMI).
The idea is to encourage employees to act responsibly, lose weight and lower their health care needs. But critics say it will humiliate and stigmatize obese employees and amounts to nothing short of a “fat tax.”
A BMI test uses height and weight measurements to calculate the percentage of body fat in adult males and females. Alabama is using a BMI threshold of 35 — 30 is considered obese, by most medical standards — to determine who doesn’t have to pay the automatic $25 deduction.
Obesity and what you eat are fair game, but what are the questions really missing here? The questions missing are, “are you gay or straight?”, the other one is, “are you engaging in risky sexual behaviour?”.
There are other lifestyles that place a tremendous burden on society, so why is it that a family that takes responsibility for itself is so open to attack?
There is no starker contrast between the the two Americas than this.
What side are you on?
