A Break From the Daily Grind

A Kinder, Gentler GM

It’s a pretty safe bet that GM will file for bankruptcy Monday with the public chipping in billions of dollars as majority owner of the new Government Motors.

But it appears that a new kind of automotive company is retooling and redefining itself and planning on redefining the American Auto experience.

We’ve gone from this:
musclecars

To this:

In essence vehicles designed like and of the same size as plastic porta-potties with wheels. In the color of your choice of course.

Goodbye detroit, it was a good run.

North Korea goes Nuclear

How will Obama handle this?

N. Korea Says It Has Conducted Nuclear Test

BREAKING NEWS — North Korea announced Monday that it successfully carried out an underground nuclear test, weeks after threatening to restart its rogue atomic program.

The country’s official Korean Central News Agency called Monday’s test “part of measures to bolster its nuclear deterrent for self-defense.”

President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency security session. His spokesman, Lee Dong-kwan, confirmed that a nuclear test may have been carried out in the North.

Seismologists from the U.S., South Korea and Japan reported earthquakes in an northeastern area, where North Korea conducted a nuclear test in 2006.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake was registered in northeastern North Korea at 9:54 a.m. (0054 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake, measured at a depth of 6 miles underground, occurred 40 miles northwest of the city of Kimchaek, the USGS said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also said it detected seismic activity Monday morning. “We are checking whether they were due to a nuclear test,” agency official Gen Aoki said in Tokyo.

Good thing we have dedicated men and women in our military.

Memorial Day 2009

For most Americans Memorial Day is an all encompassing 3 day weekend of barbecues, get together and time at the lake or park. A mini vacation away from the stress of work and the family grind.

For others though it has a little more meaning. I’m a veteran, two of my sons are veterans, my dad was a veteran and some of his brothers and so on through my family. We do the lake and barbecues also…after we honored our friends and relatives who served and lost their lives in service to our country.

It was one tradition that my father insisted on while he was alive, to spend some time in remembrance of those who payed the final price.

Tradition matters in families and all things military and I could go on about some that I learned growing up.

But instead I think I’d rather post on the origin of Taps.

Janeane Garofalo for the Supreme Court

Well it seems that the Senate is “urging” Obama to cast as wide a net as possible in his consideration for a nominee to the Supreme Court after Justice Souter steps down.

Senators Urge Obama to Look Outside the Box, Beyond the Bench for High Court Nominee

With Supreme Court Justice David Souter retiring this summer, Democrats in particular say the vacancy is an opportunity for President Obama to diversify the high court — not just by choosing a woman or minority justice, but a candidate with a resume that includes something other than years on the bench.

~snip~They seemed to echo Obama’s own stated preference for a nominee who demonstrates “empathy” for ordinary people and relies on more than “abstract legal theory” in making decisions.

“I would like to see more people from outside the judicial monastery, somebody who has had some real-life experience, not just as a judge,” Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Sen. Arlen Specter, who this past week announced he was switching his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat, said the next Supreme Court justice need not be a judge, or even a lawyer.

He told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that he hopes Obama will bypass the federal appeals court, historically the breeding ground for Supreme Court nominees, in his search. He said the president could choose a “statesman or stateswoman” for the position instead.

“I would hope that he would look beyond the Circuit Courts of Appeals which now populates the Supreme Court and pick someone with a greater world experience and diversity,” Specter said, noting that the sitting justices have “lives and experiences which are all very similar.”

“It would be good to get people who know something besides wearing a black robe,” Specter said. ~snip~

The suspense is killing me, so I’m going to suggest the nomination of Janeane Garofalo.

She’s a woman (kind of), she’s not a judge or a lawyer (obviously), she’s not in the Circuit Courts of Appeals (thank God) and she’s lived a life that is nothing like the lives of sitting justices.

Oh, and she also fancies herself as a statesman (or stateswoman)…and a scientist!!!

for example.

Yup, she’d fit in just fine.

Destroying the Health Care Industry

Think that the democrats in congress don’t want to destroy private health  insurance companies?

Make no mistake, they know exactly what they are doing.
